Education Program

In most circumstances, students with disabilities attend their neighborhood schools alongside their peers without disabilities. However, on occasion, a student's individualized education program (IEP) team will determine that the student requires a placement in a more restrictive setting based on a student's unique disability-related needs. In rare circumstances, this may mean a setting outside of the school district, including schools or facilities that are privately owned and operated.

Advocates private school, listed with Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), specializes in advancing the academic goals of students who aren't successful in traditional school settings. School districts contract with Advocates private school for students with severe physical or emotional trauma. Service array includes:

  • Full Day In-Person Group (5 days/week)
  • Full-Day In-Person 1:1 (5 days/week)
  • Virtual Group Services
  • Virtual 1:1 with scheduled home visits
  • In-Home 1:1
  • 1:1 On-site support at school
  • SNAP (Special Needs Autism Program)

The Education Team partners with schools, counties and parents to achieve student goals. AHTL provides academic support based on the need of the student, working with the referring school to execute the IEP and keep the student on track with peers. Most services include up to 10 hours/month of IEP focus or Social Emotional Learning (SEL) specific time and up to 2 hours/month of parent mentoring/transition services.

AHTL provides a summer academic program to continue support and maintain at-risk youth when school is not in session. The Education Team works closely with school district personnel and parents to create an effective plan toward successful summer academic achievement.

We have experienced success with all ages and varieties of presenting challenges. For some students, we work with districts around graduation planning and vocational skills, including opportunities to participate in work related experience and post-secondary education planning.
