Become a Foster Parent or Respite Provider!

Thinking about becoming a foster parent? It may sound intimidating; that's why Advocates builds a supportive village around each foster family to help support the unique needs of children placed in our care. Foster parents are also trained to recognize and address some of the most common challenges our kids bring. It's this team work philosophy that makes the difference.

To become a foster parent, all you do is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., for a "no strings attached" phone interview. She will start your application and gather some basic information if you decide to move forward with becoming a foster parent.

Once you have the basic information from Amy, you are scheduled for a home visit. That may sound scary too; the home visit is just to get an idea of your home's layout, number of beds and to identify basic safety precautions. We are looking for all types of people and families; our foster parents are people just like you - with dishes in the sink some days, and toothpaste on bathroom mirrors on most. That's okay - we get it! More important is that you want to make a difference - that's why you're reading this!

Once your initial home visit is complete, you are enrolled in some trainings to get you prepared. These trainings take around 30 hours over a few weeks and are scheduled at your convenience. The whole process takes around 8-12 weeks. There are typically 3-6 home visits depending on the make-up of your home and your availability to meet.

Next your application is finalized and sent to the state for review, and then you’re licensed! Through the entire process, Advocates is getting to know you and your family and so we can connect you with kids that will mesh well with your family and lifestyle. We try our best, but sometimes things don’t work out – we are there with you and the child every step of the way.

The most important quality of an Advocates Foster Family is their willingness to work with a team of care providers, social workers and biological family to help the youth and family unit be the best they can be! Please call or write to learn more. You can make a difference in the life of a child!
