Become a Foster Parent or Respite Provider

Thinking about becoming a foster parent? It may sound intimidating; that's why Advocates builds a supportive village around each foster family to help support them through the unique needs of children placed in our care. Foster Parenting isn’t just for families though! Almost anyone can become a foster parent.

Advocates will take the time to get to know you, resolve barriers and address concerns throughout the application process. When you decide to move forward with becoming a foster parent, you simply provide some basic information; our team is with you throughout the application and licensing process.

  • Once you’ve submitted some basic information, you will meet your licensing specialist and are scheduled for a home visit*. Sounds like a lot, right? The home visit is just to get an idea of your home's layout, number of beds and to confirm basic safety precautions are met. There is no right or wrong here. We are looking for all types of people and families! Foster Parents are people just like you and me – totally put together some days, dirty dishes in the sink on others, and toothpaste on bathroom mirrors on most. That's okay! More important is that you want to make a difference - that's why you're reading this!
  • After the initial home visit is complete, you are enrolled in some trainings to get you prepared. These trainings take around 30 hours over the course of a few weeks and are scheduled at your convenience; in person or virtual. The whole process takes around 8-12 weeks. There are typically 3-6 home visits, total, depending on the make-up of your home and your availability to meet with your licensing specialist.
  • Next your application is finalized and sent to the state for review, and then you become a licensed Foster Parent! Are you ready to change some lives?
  • Through the entire process, Advocates is getting to know you and your family so we can connect you with kids that will mesh well with your family and lifestyle. During this time, you are preparing to welcome a child. Sometimes it takes a few tries to match up a child with a foster family – we are there with you and your kiddo every step of the way.

The most important quality of an Advocates Foster Family is the willingness to work with a team of care providers, social workers and biological family to help the youth and family unit be the best they can be!
